humpty dumpty

"Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,
All the king's horses and all the king's men,
Couldn't put Humpty together again."

"So, tell me your story."

"What story?" She sat on the floor confused, not quite sure what he was getting at.

"You know, your story."

"I'm not quire sure I have a story - I'm not that interesting of a person."

He laughed, but his voice was emphatic, insistent in its tone. "You're a tough one to crack. You know that, don't you?"

She didn't look at him as he watched her, waiting for her to speak. She wasn't sure what she should say. Speaking now would be like walking on eggshells - there were only so many words she could tiptoe around without cracking the shell she had so carefully constructed around herself.

He waited, staring at her silently. His prodding look became unbearable in the silence, a jab the pierced her, propelling her forward ever so slightly. Her mind finally gave way to the pressure of his insistence, and she spoke, her voice barely audible as the words spilled softly from her mouth.

This could be her story:

Version A: Boy meets girl. Boy cracks girl. Boy cannot put girl together again. Boy leaves girl.

Version B: Boy meets girl. Boy cracks girl. Boy (knight in shining armor that he is) puts girl together again. Girl (damsel in distress that she is) is saved by boy. Boy and girl live happily ever after.

Version C: Boy meets girl. Boy cracks girl. Boy is disenchanted with girl. Boy steps on girl's eggshells as he leaves the room.

Version D: Boy meets girl. Boy cracks girl. Boy doesn't realize he has cracked girl. Girl is upset by insensitivity of boy. Girl becomes more fragile than before. Later, boy shatters girl. Boy leaves.

Version E: Boy meets girl. Boy listens to girl. Boy thinks he has cracked girl, but girl doesn't really tell her story. Boy is more intrigued by girl. See versions A - D for possible endings.

    Not always... I think sometimes girl runs away from boy, too. I think most of the time (but not all), boy is joking when he wants to crack girl and then discovers things he doesn't really want to see. Other times, boy is sincere but pushes too hard because girl isn't ready yet. Basically...it's all relative. Depends on the boy and the girl as to who does the cracking and leaving.

    (Huzzah for factual conversations/dreams that turn into fictional stories! :))

A bunch of people have asked me about Sam's birth. So here are more details (and pictures) than anyone ever wanted. Enjoy! (Also, I wrote this a few weeks ago. It's amazing to see how much he has changed over the past seven weeks. Time flies when you are sleep deprived.) convos with a prego lady

Truth: pregnancy has made me rather cynical. I try to keep it hidden most of the time (and usually David is the one who bears the brunt of my pent-up sass. He is a champion). I'm not sure why cynicism is a current symptom I am experiencing. It may be due to the fact that I recently read a quote that opened my eyes to all of the nonsensical things people say to fill up space.
