sonnet with no number

a sonnet to now end the tears that grace
the pale and aching skin, now rubbing raw
the eyes that rain in ribbons, salt's disgrace,
the sting and rueful rash. sadness's law
decrees that silence must now follow tears,
the cries that pillow's stifle cannot sound;
though time has softened grief's deep pain, the years
can never hide the aching heart that pounds
the drums of fighting loss. now only pain
can sing within the depths of silent night,
a lullaby heard sullen by the rain,
whose knowing sounds will sigh with heart contrite.
to tell the truth, the tears have not yet come
though heart does cry in longing to be home.
