beyond the ending
sometimes i wonder
what lies beyond the finish line.
that wondering scares me.
in looking above, beyond,
much farther than the eye can see,
i lose sight of the end to which i run.
faltering, i stumble.
haltingly i stand,
scraping the skin from my knees,
the gravel from my palms.
wincing, i brush painful tears
from aching eyes.
looking up,
i see the end,
my goal in sight.
to it i run,
not beyond,
because it is the only end
i can possibly reach.
what lies beyond the finish line.
that wondering scares me.
in looking above, beyond,
much farther than the eye can see,
i lose sight of the end to which i run.
faltering, i stumble.
haltingly i stand,
scraping the skin from my knees,
the gravel from my palms.
wincing, i brush painful tears
from aching eyes.
looking up,
i see the end,
my goal in sight.
to it i run,
not beyond,
because it is the only end
i can possibly reach.
